Awards Information and Criteria

General Information

  • All entries must have been published between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2016.
  • Advertisements, features and designs must have been created in house.
  • Stories must have been written by a staff writer.
  • Photos must have been taken by a staff photographer.
  • The Awards are open to all financial members of Community Newspapers of Australia Pty Ltd.
  • Closing date is Wednesday 29 March 2017 for all entries
  • Please note for 2017, the Newspaper of the Year category is digital only (no hard copies to be sent)
  • Finalists announced in May 2017, with national awards held in Melbourne in June 2017

Entry Process

  • All entries (except Best Special Publication) must be submitted via the online portal located here
  • The portal allows for uploading of material such as photographs, PDFs and JPEGs. It is expected that all entries will be uploaded digitally with the exception of Best Special Publication.
  • Should you be presenting a portfolio of multiple assets (i.e. news story, screenshots, social media posts) that comprise one entry – please combine these as a single PDF.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure your entry is correct. Submissions entered into the wrong category will not be judged.
  • All entries with the exception of photographic categories must include a 300 word (max) submission addressing the judging criteria and provide context to the entry.

 

Hard Copy Entries

  • When submitting hard copy entries for best special publication, please print out and include the confirmation email that you have also logged your entry through the online portal. Entries for best special publication will not be accepted unless they have been registered through the online portal. Entries must be received or postmarked by March 29 to be eligible for judging.

    • One entry allowed from each masthead. Three copies of the special publication should be enclosed in an envelope.

Categories

Best Advertisement

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entries only
  • One entry will be accepted from each masthead
  • Entries MUST be created in-house
  • PDFs should include only the individual ad and must be sent via the CNA web site listed below

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

The judges will take into account creativity of advertisements, the quality of production and the perceived effectiveness of promoting the advertiser’s message.

Outstanding Design

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entries only
  • This award is to reward outstanding design which does not fit into any other category.
  • One entry will be accepted from each masthead
  • Entries MUST be created in-house
  • PDF entries can be single or multi page and should include only the appropriate design.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:

The judges will take into account creativity of the entry – the use of colour, typeface and anything else which adds to the creativity of the entry.

Examples would be double page spreads/wraparounds, special front pages, lead-in pages to features, photo spreads, digital integration, or anything else which represents quality design.

Best Advertising Feature

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entries only
  • This award is for the best advertising feature. It may be single or multiple pages.
  • One entry will be accepted from each masthead
  • Entries must be created in-house
  • PDF entries should include the entire feature in a SINGLE PDF

JUDGING CRITERIA:

Editorial is not an essential component of entries in this category. The size of the feature is irrelevant. Entries may range from a half page bridal feature to a 40-page homemaker supplement. Entries will be judged on quality of design, typography, illustration and creativity in generating a theme capable of selling advertisements.

WITH EDITORIAL:

The advertising feature may be for a single client, a cooperative advertising venture or a number of clients. The judge will take into account the relevance and value of any editorial information in the advertising feature.

WITHOUT EDITORIAL:

Entries in this category without editorial must include more than five advertisements to constitute an advertising feature. A common theme must be used to distinguish the advertising feature from other advertising pages in the paper.

Best Special Publication

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic or hard copy submission
  • Entries can be a special publication inserted into the regular newspaper or a stand alone publication
  • One entry will be accepted from each masthead
  • Entries must be produced entirely in-house (Some supplied ads are allowed)

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:

This category is to highlight special papers which companies produce throughout the year as an adjunct to their normal publications. The paper can be a different size or paper to the normal publication, but must maintain a clear identification with the original product.
There is no stipulation of what designates a special publication – it can be an anniversary feature, a product launch, a historical feature, an educational or lifestyle supplement or anything else that might be considered ‘special’.
Reference to the publisher or a masthead must be included in some capacity on the special publication.

Best Feature Photograph

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entry only
  • Entries are to be a single shot only and should reflect a more creative ‘feature’ style with an artistic creative component to the composition of the image
  • A single image can only be entered in one individual category (i.e. if photograph entered in the best feature photograph category, you cannot enter it in the best sport photograph category)
  • TWO entries will be accepted from each masthead
  • Photos must be taken by a staff photographer
  • Electronic entries are to be jpg format approximately 20x25cm @200dpi
  • JPG entries should include only the photo – not the entire page

JUDGING CRITERIA

The photo will be judged on overall quality, composition, interest and technique.

Best Sports Photograph

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

 

  • Electronic entry only
  • Entries may be an action or atmosphere photograph and must be sport related
  • A single image can only be entered in one individual category (i.e. if photograph is entered in the best feature photograph category, it cannot be entered it in the best sport photograph category)
  • TWO entries will be accepted from each masthead
  • Photos must be taken by a staff photographer
  • Electronic entries are to be jpg format approximately 20x25cm @200dpi
  • JPG entries should include only the photo – not the entire page

JUDGING CRITERIA:

The photo will be judged on overall quality, action (or reaction), composition, interest and technique.

Best Feature Story

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entry only
  • Entries should be a feature article rather than hard news
  • The writing style should clearly be different to that of a news article (i.e. tone, depth, insight, creativity, length and excellence in storytelling)
  • Story must be more than 500 words in length
  • ONE entry only will be accepted from each masthead
  • PDF entries may include the story only or the entire published page. Multi page PDFs can be created which include the entry and any supporting/background material.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING 

  • Entries must be feature stories, distinct from hard news stories.
  • The writing style should clearly be different to that of a news article (i.e. tone, depth, insight, creativity, length and excellence in storytelling)
  • A staff journalist must have written the article.
  • The story must relate to a local event/issue

Best Sports Story

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entry only
  • Entries must be sports related.
  • ONE entry ONLY will be accepted from each masthead
  • PDF entries may include the story only or the entire published page. Multi page PDFs can be created which include the entry and any supporting/background material.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING 

  • Entries must be sports stories- either reports of a sports event or feature stories about sports events, sports personalities, clubs or associations.
  • A staff journalist must have written the story.
  • The story must relate to local sports events, clubs, personalities, associations or issues.

Best Community Service Campaign Award

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entry only
  • One entry will be accepted from each masthead but it may be a collection of stories based around a community campaign
  • Entries must include the aim/objective of the campaign, how it was delivered (print, social, digital) and the outcome.
  • Entries must detail the Paper’s Masthead and date of publication
  • Submissions should give brief details of the paper’s circulation and readership profile, with emphasis on any special community needs
  • Include in online entry form submission details of the paper’s major community service activities during the year

OBJECTIVES OF THE AWARD:

  • To recognise the wide range of community services that Australia’s community newspapers provide.
  • To encourage further involvement in community service by community newspaper publishers.
  • To create an awareness of the contributions being made to community services by individual suburban newspapers.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • Whether the community service program showed any originality/reporting/research by staff reporters or did it merely re-write or duplicate press releases from Government and other social welfare agencies. (example-CES, CYSS).
  • To what extent did the newspaper support existing community service organisations that depend on grass roots community support for continuing their task.
  • To what extent did the newspaper raise “conscience” issues which may not be pleasant, may stand on a few toes (maybe even some advertising dollars) but ultimately should have been brought to the attention of the readers.

Best News Story

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entry only
  • Entries must be driven by a news event
  • ONE entry ONLY will be accepted from each masthead. Additional entries will be ignored.
  • PDF entries may include the story only or the entire published page. Multi page PDFs can be created which include the entry and any supporting/background material.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • The criteria for Best News Story revolve around clarity, precision, accuracy, economy, creativity and newsworthiness.
  • Extending these criteria further, the Best News Story should contain information, which is so important it arouses public interest or debate. The story should use a hard core of fact, some opinion, but also use quotes well and wisely. It should be professionally constructed and lead the reader on to the last word.
  • A further consideration might be whether the story is based on action or reaction. The former demonstrates reporters’ initiative. If the story is a local Government story it should aim to take the reader beyond the routine reporting of a council debate and mundane reports/press releases distributed by council officers.

Best News Photograph

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Electronic entry only
  • Entries must be news photographs
  • A single image can only be entered in one individual category (i.e. if photograph is entered in the best feature photograph category, it cannot be entered it in the best sport photograph category)
  • TWO entries will be accepted from each masthead
  • Photos must be taken by a staff photographer
  • Electronic entries are to be jpg format approximately 20x25cm @200dpi
  • JPG entries should include only the photo – not the entire page

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • The photo will be judged on overall newsworthiness, quality, composition, interest and technique.

Best Digital Publishing

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

  • Online entry only
  • Entries can be any form of digital publishing – website, app, digital initiative or project, social media campaign etc.
  • Entries must be related to the community newspaper or parent company
  • One entry will be accepted from each masthead – alternatively a group entry (eg. NewsLocal, Leader Group) may be submitted.
  • Links to the relevant content, a screenshot and a brief overview should be included in entry form

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • How informative and attractive is the content
  • Is the user experience positive (i.e. well designed, easy to navigate or simple to use)
  • Does it have information the reader desires
  • Is it adding to the relevance of the paper

Newspaper of the Year

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

  • This category is now digital entries only – NO PAPER ENTRIES
  • Judging criteria is the same for all Best Newspaper categories – small circulation (<30,000), medium circulation (30,001 – 50,000), large circulation (50,001+)
  • Two different issues of the masthead are required for judging. You are free to choose which issues you send provided they fall within the 2016 calendar year.
  • The entries must be submitted digitally, either a link to a digital edition of the newspaper OR a combined/compressed PDF entry – all pages must be accessible
  • Newspapers are to be judged for news content, photographic content, layout, typography, and advertising presentation. Frequency of publication and the number of pages of a newspaper will not be taken into account.
  • Each entry will consist of two issues of the newspaper and any associated background material.
  • Entries for the Best Newspaper award should be judged on news and photographic content, layout, typography and design, advertising presentation and impact. Other factors should include the degree of encouragement given by the newspaper for readers to write to the editor and the overall balance between advertising and editorial. With that in mind, the following point allocation is proposed:
Layout and design: Ease of reading and logical and consistent location of stories and articles as well as overall appearance is important. 20
News Columns: Content, quality of writing, quality of sub-editing, news selections and emphasis 35
Magazine features and editorial: Quality, variety, depth of coverage, depth of background and significance. 10
Advertising: Classified- depth of coverage of the local market place, ease of reference. 10
Advertising: Display- Effectiveness, placing, design and copy. 10
Judges Discretionary points: To be used for any factors not covered above, Any special merit and the overall impression of the newspaper. 15
